Re: digital recorders
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 8:23 PMI highly recommend getting an iPod. Couldn't be more straightforward, whereas DVAs often involve a lot of piddling around with recording, storing, uploading, converting.
Do you want the recorder to make MP3s to send to people for professional use? If so, get a good mic.
If it's just for personal use, it doesn't really matter. -

Fri, June 17, 2005 - 9:10 PMOkay, let's try the non-computer-freak-out/correct-acronym version.
This is what I meant to say. The words above are merely a figment of your imagination. ;)

If it's just for personal use, the Griffin i-mic should be fine. -

Re: digital recorders
Sat, June 18, 2005 - 9:55 AMi do have an ipod, and i thought about getting the griffin i-mic. i wonder what the quality is like, though? what i mean is, i'm not too concernec about this thing having uber top notch studio quality sound, but i would like to have a pretty good idea what i sound like so i can gauge my sound.
do you have a griffin? if so, how would you rate its sound quality based on what i said above...? oh, and i looked at the Olympus DS2. any thoughts on that one?
thank you for your recommendation! -

Re: digital recorders
Sun, June 19, 2005 - 9:20 AMThe i-mic is absolutely fine. I recorded a bunch of lines, which I was practicing at a cafe, while outdoors with cars and street sounds in the background and I could hear every word without difficulty despite the fact that I was also speaking at a very low volume.
I don't know anything about the DS2. I do know, however, that the DM20 is definitely less user-friendly than an ipod. Since DVRs have teensy-weensy built-in mics, I don't know how much better than the Griffin they could possibly be (if at all). Griffin to iPod is definitely better than my old tape recorder, though. And you can get a refurbished one from the Apple store for $20-30some.
If you already have an iPod, there is no reason to buy a voice recorder.
If you're looking to "gauge your sound" in a technical/specific way, i.e. how do my plosives sound?/how sibiliant am I?, you may not find the Griffin all that helpful. Obviously, you don't get from the Griffin what you get from a studio set-up.
Anyway, investing in a Grffin i-mic is a lot cheaper - if you already have an iPod - than buying a new DVR. -
