hello, my husband and i are taking on the adventure of recording a book on tape.
we have the book, the studio, and people to help with voices. there is a narrator and a ton of characters.
the question is, what is the best order in which to record??? as the book reads?
done voice work for others just not sure how to self produce. any tips or tricks would be helpful

Reducing Sing- song tone

Help A New Talent Out...Would Ya?

Hello There! (Great Bullwinkle, wouldn't you say?) I've been doing voices (mostly cartoon style as well as accents, etc.) for years never really paying attention to what I was doing (I was attacked by Shaggy at Universal Studios for doing a better him). Now that I've been really concentrating on it, I decided to move from Ft. Lauderdale, FL and head where the big boys play... IDAHO. But seriously, I am looking for representation and I'd like to know how and where to look. How do I make a demo, how do I find an agent, how do I audition, etc.? I do live in South East Idaho so I need all the help I can get...on many different levels. Thanks.

Hi lovelies,
I am a working VO actor in Chicago. I have been in the scene for about a year and change and have gotten a fair amount of work. I am totally obsessed with San Francisco, though, and after a great NYE vacation to visit my friends there, I am thinking of moving to the Bay Area.
I am looking for some reassurance that there are in fact voice over jobs and agencies out there. Is this the case? Chicago is extremely competitive...is SF?
Any advice or encouragement/discouragement is most welcome and appreciated!

I personally have wasted too much time as an actor not acting, a writer not writing, a musician not playing, a performer not perfroming, etc. etc. etc. - We may somertimes have to make our money doing other things but there's no reason we have to ever turn our backs on what we love and what we do best. You've got a play? We've got the actors! You need an accompianist? When? Let's use this site to our best advantage. For anyone who want's to sell a script, start a company, make a movie, play in a band, direct a play, welcome...you've got a stage, he's got a light, I've got some chairs... It's Showtime!!!

o.k. so i have taken the workshops, done some books on tape, and audio tours, a few podcasts for friends, developed some characters and working on my real. whats next? where do i start. dont have that many resorces locally and not sure what to do. not feesable to move right now, i guess i just dont know where or how to start in industry that is a lot about being in the right place at the right time. my dream in life is to do cartoons for nickelodean or disney,or any other childrens programing. just seems so unreachable when you dont know what the first steps are, any advice? thanks.

Voice work and work hours

I work a "regular job" (9-5 type), but want to get into working in the voice over field. Naturally I don't expect much work at first, so my biggest concern is balancing a real job with getting VO gigs. How does anyone else cope/balance the two? What should I expect. Technically, I'm a temp at the moment, but they do expect me 5 days a week...

elderly voice needed, female

I'm doing an independent short film and need the voice of an elderly lady. I am shooting in Malmo, Sweden but travel frequently to Colorado, USA. And it is possible I could borrow equipment to record a long-distance (but high quality) voice over. It's a low budget production, so I can offer no payment except on the rare chance I get paid myself after entrance into festivals or a distribution contract. The film will at least have a guaranteed audience in Sweden.

If anyone can give me information or help me to find elderly voice actors, please let me know. They seem more difficult to find than I realized.

An ongoing monthly audio serial based on current events in the Superman graphic novels, The Last Son of Krypton by Pendant Audio continues the Man of Steel's adventures with all-new stories. Each month a 10-15 minute "issue" is released, with a one-minute trailer two weeks beforehand.

The weekly series Shadowlands Theatre is almost gone! And in its place
stands the Sonic Society!

What IS the Sonic Society?

The Society is a weekly radio show that scours Canada, the United
States and the World for English speaking Audio Cinema (radio drama).
What WE want to do is have YOUR radio plays on our show. At the
Society, our hope is to showcase the very best in audio stories.

We see ourselves as a lightning rod attracting tales for the ears.
Each week we want to showcase new stories and interview the authors,
directors, and cast of those productions.

that you want to get out past your radio station or living room?

Small Fish in a Biiiiiiig Pond

I'm watching "The Incredibles" (yes, it took me this long to see it) and cross-referencing with IMDB and am surprised how many of the roles were played by Pixar employees. And played well. It makes me wonder what more one can do to stand out, to hone one's craft when it's that "easy" for people not directly in the field to get gigs.

Acting Career FAQ - Representation

Agent? Manager? Do It Yourself?

I recently got an email (one of dozens I've gotten on
this subject) asking me if I could - "explain the
difference between an agent and a manager and which
would be better for me to sign with - to get my career
going?"

Here's my answer:

Dear *****,

Neither an agent or a manager can help you "get a
career going."

The concept that a powerful man or woman can step in
and help you skip all the hard work involved in
starting an acting career - is a "fairy tale."

There is no short-cut to the top of show business (or
even to the middle for that matter). There's also no
Great Pumpkin or Easter Bunny.

If it could be done this way, then agents and managers
would simply pick any actor out of the thousands of
headshots they get every week and turn them into stars.

It cannot be done this way - which is why agents are
so unresponsive to unsolicited headshot mailings.

The good ones are pros and they're not going to waste
their valuable time trying to accomplish what they know
cannot be done.

Their businesses are similar - but not the same.

One sells a product. The agent is a sales person for
the product known as YOU. Sales people (agents) judge
their how well their business is going by how much
money they make. A really good sales professional likes
to make lots of money.

If your product is not saleable (one that people aren't
ready to buy yet) then a sales person won't make a lot
of money selling it (you).

Not surprisingly, agents are coldly business-like about
this part. Until you've managed to start your career
yourself (making money as an actor) don't expect any
really good sales people to be interested.

Managers are just what the word implies. The manage
things. Mailings, bookings, transportation, job offers,
promotion - the day to day business of YOU. (But keep
in mind that in most markets, they are precluded
by law from seeking work for you.)

The top managers are usually the top managers because
they manage very successful careers.

In the past two decades the professional manager class
has had its own difficulties with an influx of "bottom
feeders."

The worst of these are outright crooks, whose only goal
is to separate you from you money or your credit card
with no intention of helping you in any way.

Almost as bad are the ineffectual show biz hangers-on
who rent offices and go about the business of "signing"
practically anyone who walks through their door - then
what they do is they send out your pictures to every
little thing listed in the Breakdowns.

It's just postage.

Since these folks are generally clueless themselves,
they will submit you for stuff you aren't right for.
This is a good way to get labeled as a "clueless"
actor by the casting people.

Many young actors are fooled into thinking that they
must have a manager, any manager - that it's "good
business".

It isn't.

In reality you are signing an agreement to give someone
25% (or more) of your income after YOU successfully
ESTABLISH YOURSELF as an actor who makes money.

Bottom feeders spend a great deal of their business day
writing threatening letters to collect money from actors
who have realized their mistake and don't want to pay 25%
of their income for someone to do ineffective mailings.

The big boys (and girls) in the management game, are
just like agents when it comes to money. They want to
manage a "going concern" and they spend all their time
looking for the next "big thing."

Think about that.

Professional managers make a boatload of money when
they manage to sign on with a Vin Diesel or J-Lo - isn't
it reasonable to assume that they are LOOKING ALL THE
TIME. In fact, they hire people to look - they've got
part-time, secret lookers on their payroll.

Believe me, If you have what they want - if you are a
going concern with a name that you've made for yourself
- they know their managing skills will take you to a
whole new level (making LOTS of money) and they get a
big chunk of a LOT - then, believe me, they will seek
you out.

3. Most importantly, as long as you continue to
believe that your main job is looking for someone else
to help you "build" your career -- you won't be spending
enough time doing the crucial things you need to do
yourself to build your own career.

This is a very bad tactic which results in frustration,
wasted years and, ultimately, failure to achieve what
you want.

If you don't concentrate on doing your part it's
unlikely that you will ever build your business into
something big enough to be noticed by a good agent or
a good manager.

In other words, by all means keep looking for a sales
staff, and a management team - but don't neglect your
business while you're doing it.

Hows everyone doing? Get any cool new projects? Hows the SF vo scene? I haven't been up there for an audition or a patch or anything in ages--is it slow?...did get a Cartoon Network pilot--was AWESOME fun--we'll see if it goes...does anyone write animation scripts? I need some pieces for a demo and wanted some original stuff...also wondering if anyone has stumbled across any good new sites, castings, etc. See ya!

Hi everyone, I've been very attracted to voice-acting for a long time, but I'm not sure where to start, exactly. I'm a high-school senior who has just applied and auditioned (and am still auditioning) for college as a vocal performance major. Is this good? Is communications what I should be majoring in instead? I take private voice lessons and do as much theatre as I can, but is there anything else I should be doing?

New theatre/talent company starting.

Hi.
I am starting a new theatre/talent company in the Los Angeles area.
This will give anyone who is a member of it, real publicity, even if you live far from L.A.
The idea is, to give all members of the company, advertising space in all the programs of all the shows that we do.
That will include, plays, modeling shows, and anything that we do.
If you are an actor, model, or someone who wants to get notice in the entertainment industry, then you can have your picture, bio, e-mail address, and more in every program.
That way, if you live far from Hollywood, or, are not in a show, you still get notice.
If you are a business, then you can take out advertising space, and become a member without paying membership dues.
I want a quality company, that gives back to the community, and one that brings customers to any business that is a part of this.
I LOVE the idea.
Entertainment and business have been very successful together for years, and advertising combined with people who have an eye for success, well, wins.

New to the tibe...

....and to voice acting in general. I live in Philadelphia, and tho I've only taken a quick look around there doesn't seem to be much in the way of resources for voice actors out this way. For years my friends have been telling me to go into voice acting, and while I do have a full time work gig right now I'd at least like to find out more. So some questions for the group:

1) do you need to go to school to get work?
2) is it necessary to do it full time?
3) is there any work to be had on the east coast?
4) whats the best way to go about finding work?

SO! Where is everyone from? Who are you studying with? How are your careers going? Feel free to post tips, wisdom, etc. etc.

For my part, I'm in Los Angeles, I've been studying with a voice coach named Leigh Gilbert (who ROCKS! Highly recommend), and almost all of my VO's have been in video games. I'm in between agents but looking.

Women still don't seem to get the bread-and-butter announcer gigs. I remember that the "The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show" really stood out to me because it had a female announcer. Anyway, I'm listening to MP3s of the Democratic National Convention and was surprised to find they had a female announcing the speakers. She did a good job, too.

How does one go about getting work?

Hey all - just checking in as I cannot seem to manage sleep at the moment. Ugh. How goes it for all you fellow voice actors? I feel like things are picking up here, although that could be because I had a gig recently. Still, I just have this vibe that maybe things are picking up - anyone else getting more auditions in SF, more work? Any leads for the struggling?

I am from SF but living in LA-I am with JE Talent up there (supposedly...yawn) and Sandie Schnarr Talent here--she has MADE my career...I am a full time actor, make my living off vo's mostly, working on an animation track right now. I have a promo/trailer track and commercial track you can hear at www.courtenaytaylor.com. I have done mostly commercials, but am working more in CD Rom and clawing my way into animation (the damned ani track would help, if I could just finish!!!) I studied with Taylor at VOice Factory in SF (props for giving me my first job and changing my life!!!) I am currently voicing Ghirardelli TV and radio in SF, as well as some other stuff, but enough shameful self promotion. I believe in paying it forward, and helping out people who ask and are willing to help themselves-hope this becomes a great forum for casting, work and more work, self generated projects-I'd love to voice a renegade animation series like www.homestarrunner.com if anyone knows anyone who can draw the damned things on the computer! Let's rock and roll-I know you can't sit around and wait for your agent to drop work in your lap-especially for the SF kids (it's just the facts, that is why I moved)...I'd love to hear from any and all of you! Florida Animation Co-op

I'm pleased to announce the formation of a new resource for Central Florida animation professionals!

The Animation Co-op is a non-profit network of artists, voice actors & animators dedicated to the cooperative support of independent animation production.

The Co-op facilitates the creation of independent animated ventures by serving as an informal hub of association, resource sharing, collaboration & critique. Co-op forums include member gatherings and social events, screenings, educational outreach and an online database.

The co-op has seen much success in the Los Angeles, CA area and has now expanded to include an Orlando, FL chapter. Plans are already in the works for our first meeting and screenings.
